Un officier canadien atrocement défiguré, Gordon, se confie à Lady Édith et affirme être le cousin Patrick, et avoir donc survécu au naufrage du «Titanic». Il prétend avoir souffert d'amnésie à la suite de la catastrophe. Après être passé pour un passager canadien, il a été débarqué à Montréal. Il connaît des détails troublants sur Downton et la famille Crawley. Cette nouvelle embarrasse tout le monde et Lord Grantham décide de lancer une enquête. Il découvre que l'un des amis de Patrick, un certain Peter Gordon, pourrait être en fait le soldat mutilé. Seule Edith croit que cet officier est son cousin. Pendant ce temps, Véra apprend au juge que Bates l'a payée pour divorcer
