En 1916, dans le petit village de Kirrary, sur la côte Ouest de l'Irlande, Rosy, la fille de Tom Ryan, le propriétaire de la taverne, épouse le maître d'école Charles Shaughnessy, de quinze ans son aîné. Mais dès les premiers jours de mariage, Rosy, romantique et sensuelle, est déçue par la maladresse amoureuse de son époux. Elle fait alors la connaissance du major Randolph Doryan, qui vient de prendre le commandement d'une garnison de la région après avoir été grièvement blessé au front. Rosy et Randolph s'aiment passionnément mais, à cause des indiscrétions maladroites de Michael, l'idiot du village, leur liaison fait très vite scandale
