Alors que Poirot et Hastings sont à Deauville, Paul Renauld, riche importateur de diamants, les consulte à propos d'un trafic de pierres précieuses au Chili. Il est enlevé peu après et Hastings découvre son cadavre sur un parcours de golf, une lettre d'amour signée «DB» dans la poche de son manteau. Une compétition s'engage alors entre Poirot et Giraud, de la Sûreté française. Si Poirot gagne, Giraud lui donne son inséparable pipe. Dans le cas contraire, Poirot doit se raser la moustache
