A la veille de la seconde guerre mondiale, le Mayfield Kestrel, un nouvel aéroplane, est en train d'être testé. Cet avion est techniquement supérieur au Messerschmitt allemand. Mais son constructeur trouve que l'appui financier du gouvernement anglais est insuffisant. Suite à son appel anonyme, Poirot rencontre Lady Mayfield, la femme du constructeur d'avion. Son mari a perdu la confiance du gouvernement britannique à cause d'une histoire d'espionnage mettant en cause les Japonais et une mondaine aux sentiements ouvertement pro-germanique, Mme Joanna Vanderlyn
