A l'Opéra, Hercule Poirot est abordé par lady Chatterton qui croit sa très belle amie Marguerite Clayton en danger. Cette dernière fut à l'origine, dix ans plus tôt, d'un duel. Et il semble qu'aujourd'hui Edward Clayton, mari jaloux et possessif, soit sur le point de la tuer. Clayton rentre chez lui après avoir acheté un couteau. Il annonce qu'il doit partir pour Edinburgh et qu'il ne rejoindra donc pas son épouse à la soirée chez le major Rich. A son club, Clayton confie à son ami le colonel Curtiss qu'il soupçonne une relation coupable entre Marguerite et le beau major Rich
