Dans le sud de l'Égypte, le Pacha, riche propriétaire terrien, est à la tête d'une importante exploitation de canne à sucre. Après une formation d'agronomie, le fils de son contremaître aide, lui, les paysans voisins à améliorer leurs rendements. Lorsque la récolte des petits cultivateurs obtient un meilleur classement que celle de Pacha, celui-ci décide de détruire leurs récoltes
