Imogene O'Neil travaille avec le docteur Lehman à l'observatoire Baja, au Mexique, où ils repèrent un météore qui fonce vers la Terre et pourrait la détruire. Les hauts responsables du pays sont immédiatement informés mais personne ne veut les croire. Pourtant, une famille de la côte Ouest signale des débris tombés dans leur jardin. Alors qu'une réunion de crise est enfin organisée, un vent de panique souffle sur la Californie. Tandis que le docteur Lehman a disparu, Imogene est arrêtée par erreur par la police qui ignore son identité. Elle est la seule à connaître la trajectoire exacte des météorites
