Foshan, Chine du Sud, 1936. Maître de Wing Chun, un art martial chinois traditionnel, Ip Man n'a jamais eu besoin de travailler. Menant une vie d'esthète, il se partage entre une épouse qu'il vénère, sa passion pour les arts martiaux et ses visites au Pavillon d'or, une maison de plaisir où se retrouve l'élite de Foshan. Ip Man est choisi pour succéder au grand maître et va devoir l'affronter. Mais pendant ce temps, les troupes japonaises poursuivent leur avancée en territoire chinois
