Après ses aventures dans le passé puis dans le futur, Marty McFly est enfin de retour en 1985, dans la petite bourgade de Hill Valley. Il reçoit une lettre de son vieil ami Doc Brown, postée cent ans plus tôt. Ce dernier est au Far West, en 1885, où il coule des jours heureux. Mais l'examen de la pierre tombale de Doc lui démontre que son ami n'a plus que cinq jours à vivre. Marty reprend aussitôt la DeLorean, la rutilante voiture à voyager dans le temps, et part pour l'Ouest
