Terry Evans et sa fille Amelia emménagent à Woodside. Terry est chef de chantier et il doit faire démolir l'ancienne bibliothèque municipale pour y construire un hôtel très moderne. Veuf depuis deux ans, Terry a décidé de plus s'investir dans la vie scolaire de sa fille. Lors d'une réunion des parents d'élèves, il rencontre Carol, une femme divorcée, mère d'un jeune garçon de l'âge d'Amelia, et farouchement attachée aux traditions. Alors que tout les opposent, ils travaillent ensemble pour organiser le spectacle de Noël et contre toute attente, à force d'écoute et de compréhension Terry et Carol s'entendent et s'apprivoisent
