Sheldon a du mal à comprendre la notion d'amitié. Il ne l'envisage pas autrement qu'en l'intellectualisant. Il se lance alors dans une étude scientifique lui permettant de devenir ami avec Barry Kripke, et ce dans l'unique but d'accéder à un programme spécifique de l'université dont seul Barry a accès. Ne sachant pas lui-même comment il a fait pour avoir des amis, Sheldon essaie d'analyser les raisons qui font que chaque membre de la bande l'apprécie.
