Jim Phelps, agent du département de l'IMF, celui des « missions impossibles », se voit confier par l'agent de la CIA Kittridge la charge d'une nouvelle opération à Prague. Il doit y démasquer l'espion Alexandre Golitzyn quelques instants après que ce dernier aura volé la liste des agents américains en Europe Centrale. Phelps réunit son équipe, dont font partie sa femme Claire, son assistant Ethant Hunt et ses aides.
