En novembre 1989, à Billingham, dans le nord-est de l'Angleterre, Julie, jeune maman de 22 ans, disparaît. A sa mère bouleversée, Ann Ming, la police rétorque qu'elle a dû fuir pour Londres. Ann sait que sa fille n'aurait jamais abandonné Kevin, son garçon de 5 ans, et insiste pour que l'affaire soit prise au sérieux. Devant son insistance, les policiers organisent une fouille de la maison de Julie, sans succès.
