Un certain Bill Shields a disparu depuis quelques jours. C'est sa soeur, inquiète de ne plus avoir de nouvelles, qui alerte les agents du FBI. Elle leur explique que son frère est très déprimé depuis la mort de sa fille Lauren. Celle-ci a succombé huit mois plus tôt à une leucémie. Depuis ce tragique événement, il s'est mis en congé de son travail et sa femme l'a quitté. Selon sa soeur, Bill a une nouvelle passion qui lui prend tout son temps.
