Deux jeunes filles, Nicole et Heather, sont victimes d'un grave accident de voiture à l'issue d'une soirée arrosée. Heather meurt sur le coup et Nicole sort du coma quelques jours après, paraplégique. Elle est aussitôt assassinée dans sa chambre d'hôpital. Sheldon, autrefois chirurgien dans ce même hôpital, y revient pour les besoins de l'enquête, non sans devoir affronter les fantômes de son passé. Mac et son équipe soupçonnent d'abord un suicide assisté
