En juin 1940, Villeneuve, petite sous-préfecture fictive du Jura, est bouleversée par l'arrivée de l'armée allemande. L'Occupation de la France vient de commencer, elle va durer quatre ans. Sur la Terre comme au ciel. 15 octobre 1940. Les Allemands sont à la recherche d'un pilote anglais égaré tombé du ciel. Lucienne reçoit une lettre à la suite de son inspection. Elle s'attend à être révoquée après la mort des enfants de sa classe, le 12 juin. C'est finalement la directrice, Madame Morhange qui est révoquée, à cause de son statut de juif. Raymond retrouve Lorrain, l'époux de Marie, qu'il croyait mort au front
