Le super-intendant Maurice Jobson enquête sur le kidnapping d'une petite fille. Il ne tarde pas à découvrir d'inquiétantes similitudes avec les disparitions d'enfants qui ont fait trembler le Yorkshire quelques années auparavant. Se pourrait-il que l'homme emprisonné pour ces crimes soit victime d'une erreur judiciaire ? En tentant de le démontrer, l'avocat John Piggot met au jour des affaires qui ont visiblement été étouffées...
