Varsovie, 1939. La troupe du Polski Theatr, menée par Joseph et Maria Tura, répète Gestapo, une création antinazie. Mais la censure ayant interdit la pièce, elle s'en tient à Hamlet. Or, chaque soir, au grand désarroi de Joseph, alors qu'il entame d'un air pénétré son grand monologue ("To be or not to be..."), un jeune spectateur des premiers rangs quitte ostensiblement son fauteuil. Le colonel Sobinski, un bel aviateur, profite en réalité du moment le plus propice pour aller rejoindre Maria dans la loge conjugale
