Sur Cybertron, le mineur Orion Pax et ses amis découvrent que leur leader Sentinel Prime a trahi leur peuple en s'alliant aux Quintessons. Ils mènent alors une rébellion pour révéler la vérité et le renverser. Orion devient Optimus Prime, choisi pour porter la Matrice du commandement et guider les Autobots. Son ami D-16, devenu Megatron, choisit la voie de la violence et fonde les Decepticons. Les deux anciens alliés s'affrontent désormais pour le contrôle de Cybertron
