L'astronome John Putnam et sa fiancée Ellen Fields sont témoins de la chute d'un météore dont ils remarquent la lumière au-dessus du désert de l'Azizona. John est bientôt persuadé que le météore est habité mais personne ne prête attention à ses théories. Plusieurs personnes se conduisent pourtant de manière curieuse et John découvre que les êtres qui habitent l'engin spatial ont pris l'apparence de certaines personnes afin de pouvoir aller et venir sans être inquiétés
