Irlande, XVIIIème siècle. Depuis la mort de son père, tué lors d'un duel, l'espiègle Redmond Barry donne pas mal de fil à retordre à sa mère. Le jeune homme s'est en effet entiché de sa cousine Nora Brady, promise au beau et riche capitaine Quin. Après avoir provoqué ce dernier en duel, Barry est forcé de quitter le pays... Réfugié en Angleterre, il s'engage dans l'armée britannique pour combattre les Prussiens. Mais en 'goûtant' à son premier champ de bataille, l'énergumène réalise qu'il exècre les armes et encore plus les uniformes ! Empruntant des chemins de traverse, Redmond trouve le réconfort dans les bras d'une pulpeuse Allemande
