Le grand George Washington Mc Lintock (G-W pour les intimes) se trouve être, vers 1860, le seigneur incontesté d'une région à peine civilisée de l'Arkansas et d'un village qui d'ailleurs porte son nom. Il règne sur les terres, les troupeaux, les cow-boys, le shérif, le chemin de fer et les Peaux-Rouges qu'il a d'abord combattus avant de s'en faire des amis. Il n'y a qu'une personne sur qui il n'a aucune priorité : sa femme Kathe, devant qui il se sent désarmé.
