Dans sa maison isolée, le manoir de Marsdon, Jonathan Maltravers est convalescent, entouré de sa femme Susan, beaucoup plus jeune que lui et de Miss Rawlinson, sa secrétaire. Une femme d'un certain âge. Poirot et Hastings arrivent à l'hôtel du village, à la demande urgente du patron, Naughton qui a une énigme à résoudre.
