Une jeune Croate prénommée Ilinca a réussi à s'extirper des griffes d'une organisation mafieuse d'Halifax. Catherine la prend sous son aile, malgré le risque encouru par le voisinage. Soupçonnée dans le meurtre de la mère de Tommy Lee Royce, après sa découverte du corps et aux messages de menaces laissés sur le répondeur de la victime, Catherine tente en vain de se disculper.
