Katrina, jeune immigrée russe, est la demoiselle de compagnie d'Amélia Barrowby, une vieille dame impotente qui vit à Surrey avec sa nièce Mary et le mari de celle-ci, Henry. Amélia prend des médicaments qui lui sont administrés par Katrina. Toute la maisonné part pour la célèbre exposition de Fleurs de Chelsea. Hercule Poirot et Hastings sont de la partie. Lorsque Poirot rentre chez lui il trouve une lettre d'Amélia, qui dit se sentir en danger. Le lendemain le détective se rend chez la vieille femme, mais celle-ci est déjà morte empoisonnée à la strychnine
