Hercule Poirot est appelé par la London and Scottish Bank. M. Shaw, l'un des directeurs a failli être écrasé par un chauffard. M. Vavasour, l'autre directeur pense que son confrère a été victime d'une tentative de meurtre. Shaw doit partir sur le «Queen Mary» avec une malle remplie de bons «Liberty» d'une valeur de un million de dollars. Vavasour a pleine confiance envers M. Shaw.
