Jackson Curtis, écrivain divorcé, emmène ses enfants en week-end dans le Wyoming. Là, il découvre que le gouvernement, alerté depuis quelques années par l'imminence de la fin du monde, a conçu des vaisseaux pour sauver quelques privilégiés quand viendra l'apocalypse. Il essaie alors de convaincre Kate, son ex-femme, de fuir la Californie menacée d'un tremblement de terre. Kate ne croit pas un mot de ses sombres prédictions, jusqu'au moment où la Terre se met à trembler
