Quatre années se sont écoulées depuis le drame du premier Jurassic Park, détruit par la cupidité humaine. Le milliardaire John Hammond confie alors au docteur Ian Malcolm un terrible secret. Une petite île inconnue et non répertoriée a servi à l'élevage des bébés sauriens. Des touristes imprudents l'auraient découverte et auraient disparu. Le cupide neveu de Hammond, Peter Ludlow, décide aussitôt de monter une expédition pour capturer ces espèces préhistoriques et créer un Jurassic Park II, près de San Francisco
