Saigon. Militaire au bord du suicide, le capitaine Willard se voit confier une mission secrète : l'élimination du colonel Kurtz, américain cantonné au-delà de la frontière cambodgienne, régnant comme un dieu sur une armée d'indigènes. Willard étudie les documents sur cet homme brillant, apparemment devenu fou. Sur une embarcation de fortune, avec quelques soldats, Willard remonte le fleuve vers la frontière. Il est aidé par le lieutenant Kilgore qui décide de «nettoyer» un village au napalm pour pouvoir faire du surf. Plus, loin, l'embarcation croise une base qui se prépare à un spectacle avec des «Playmates», puis un pont défendu par des soldats noirs
