Sur une planète éloignée, l'équipe de SG-1 découvre une salle mystérieuse dans laquelle est stocké le savoir des quatre races les plus évoluées de la galaxie. Un signal très fort est envoyé à O'Neill qui semble pouvoir déchiffrer ces caractères inconnus. Il perd contact avec le monde réel. Le message est le suivant : «vous avez un grand potentiel, si votre évolution reste constante vous pouvez devenir la cinquième race capable de dialoguer avec nous»
