L'inspecteur Barnaby enquête sur une affaire pour le moins extraordinaire. Le policier apprend, en effet, qu'on a découvert les corps d'anciens criminels, disposés en cercle, dans un champ de blé. On dit que c'est l'oeuvre d'extraterrestres mais l'inspecteur n'y croit évidemment pas et il poursuit ses investigations. Petit à petit, au cours de l'enquête, Barnaby va découvrir de mystérieuses histoires d'adultères et de vengeances qui remontent à plus de trente ans
