Los Angeles, 1998. Maria Altmann enterre sa soeur bien-aimée. Dans ses affaires elle trouve des lettres concernant une collection de tableaux que les nazis ont dérobés à sa famille. L'un d'eux, le célèbre «Portrait d'Adele Bloch-Bauer», surnommé «La Dame en or», peint par Gustav Klimt, représente sa propre tante. Il est à présent accroché au palais du Belvédère, à Vienne. Ayant eu vent d'une nouvelle loi autrichienne sur la restitution d'oeuvres d'art, Maria fait appel à un jeune avocat novice, Randy Schoenberg, petit-fils du compositeur, pour l'aider à se réapproprier le tableau.
