Jeune peintre publicitaire, Christopher vient de gagner un prix de 10 000 dollars au Congrès d'Art mondial, et se voit confier une importante commande officielle à Paris. Ainsi, va-t-il pouvoir réaliser le plus cher de ses rêves : épouser sa brillante fiancée, Elizabeth, jeune psychiatre en renom et l'emmener à Paris. Mais Christopher éprouve une bien cruelle déception lorsque sa fiancée se déclare dans l'impossibilité de donner suite à son projet
