Un tireur isolé abat un officier de la police montée en plein coeur de Central Park. Pour remonter jusqu'à lui, il manque un élément d'importance : la balle qui l'a traversé, qui est allée se loger dans le cou du cheval du policier. Les inspecteurs aimeraient la récupérer car elle représente un intérêt pour leur enquête, mais son extraction causerait la mort de l'animal. Mac souhaite éviter d'en arriver à cette extrémité et cherche à trouver des indices par d'autres moyens
