Los Angeles, dans les années 1970. À la dérive depuis la mort de sa femme, Holland March, détective privé aux méthodes douteuses, est chargé par Lily Glenn de retrouver sa nièce. Au cours de son enquête, il reçoit la visite de Jackson Healy, homme de main et ancien boxeur, payé par une jeune femme du nom d'Amelia afin de la débarrasser de March, qui lui tourne autour. Les deux hommes vont bientôt se retrouver plongés dans l'affaire du meurtre d'une starlette de films pornographiques, qui pourrait bien impliquer des personnes haut placées
