En 2093, la société Weyland affrète le vaisseau «Prometheus», à bord duquel embarque un équipage de scientifiques. Leur voyage dans l'espace, qui durera deux ans, doit leur permettre d'explorer une planète inconnue probablement peuplée d'extraterrestres. Ceux-ci pourraient bien être les créateurs de l'humanité. C'est du moins l'hypothèse qu'ils souhaitent vérifier. L'androïde David, mais aussi Elizabeth Shaw et Charlie Holloway, un couple d'archéologues, font notamment partie du voyage. Sur place ils font une première découverte : le corps d'un extraterrestre décapité
