Sur la Riviera italienne, dans les années 1920, Bella Ainsworth, une expatriée anglaise, tient un luxueux hôtel. Alors que les clients de la saison sont arrivés, tous misent sur les apparences afin de faire bonne impression. Son fils, Lucian, doit trouver une épouse en la personne de Rose, fille d'une ancienne amie de son père. Ce dernier, Cecil, cache ses troubles dans les jeux d'argent et les sorties alcoolisées. Alice, fille du couple, tente de se remettre de la mort de son mari, et élève seule sa fille Lottie. Une nouvelle nounou, Constance, est engagée afin de l'aider dans cette tâche
